The implants are affixed along the your medial temporal cortices, approximately just along the inside edge of the hippocampi. From there, a synthetic neural network traces along your real one, forward through the left medial and ventrolateral prefrontal cortices, out through the lateral temporal cortices, and up into the temperoparietal junctions.

If I'm understanding properly, the formation process for all autobiographic memory routes through this synthetic nervous system at multiple points, in order to simulate natural memory formation and all of the trappings and associations that come with it rather than simply an independent memory fragment dropped aimlessly into your long-term storage.
