Um. Hi! Hello. Bit of a long shot here, but has anyone lost a black baby chocobo recently? ( careful listeners would probably notice an intermittent chirping in the background. ) She just sort of - showed up on my doorstep this morning in a box with ribbons and everything so maybe she isn't lost after all... still, just thought I'd ask in case anyway.

( a slight pause, almost hesitant, and then he adds: ) I'm takin' care of her for now, so don't worry. If she's yours, let me know!

Must be. Can't remember where we got it, but it hatched just a few days ago.

Hey, there was a guy who left a message on the phone network about somethin' hatching? Jack, I think his name was --

That's the one! He was freaking out pretty hard.

[There's an uncertain pause, and then his next words are carefully measured.]

They're a bit of an...exotic pet. Did you find an egg too?

Yeah, I remember that! So his hatched just fine, huh? Didn't get an egg myself, the lil' thing was already out of hers by the time she got to me.

Seems like it did. Unfortunately I've never personally cared for them, but it looks healthy enough.

Where'd you find her?

As long as it's getting food and water and warmth it should be fine! This girl was in a box -- someone just left her there at the door. Almost seemed gift-wrapped the way the ribbons were on the box, but it just seemed weird, you know? Right out of the blue like that?

Yeah, that is pretty weird. Why would someone just-

[He cuts himself off. It's probably not nearly as strange as it feels. Everyone here's certainly friendly enough.]

Maybe it's just this town. Mrs. Maybird gave me a casserole when I got out of the hospital. Said I looked like I needed to eat more.

Do you know a lot about em? Chocobos?

Nah, I know people here are nice, but - leaving her out in the open, though? Sure, she was in a box and all, yeah; still doesn't mean it isn't pretty cold out.

( what if he hadn't opened the door when he had? who knows how long the poor chick would've been out there.

welp, that's done and dusted, but he hopes he doesn't have to encounter anything like it ever again. )

Dude, chocobos are the best ev -- ( but wait, did that guy say he got out of the hospital? sounds like a lot of people are, lately. ) Whoa. You were in the hospital too?

I wouldn't worry too much. Whoever left her probably knew you were home to get her.

[It was something he'd worry about, but he was a little suspicious of this place to begin with. A lingering paranoia from the day he woke and realized that at least three people with amnesia in a town where it's forbidden to talk about the past is more than a coincidence.]

I spent about a week there. Bad accident, they said.

That's rough. ( and the sympathy is real, because it hits pretty close to home. ) I totally get you, though; one put me in the hospital too - still tryin' to recall what happened. Hell, it feels like there's been a lot of accidents lately. A lot for a small town like this one, anyway.

[A pause.]

You wouldn't happened to have had a head injury, would you?

[failtography]

I... think so? Considering whatever happened messed with my memories a little ( a lot ) I probably hit my head pretty hard. 'Least I still remember spending time here, so not everything's gone.
